Check valves or non-return valves (NRV valves) are essential in allowing fluid flow in only one pre-set direction within a piping system. They act as automatic shut-off devices that prevent backflow issues due to pressure changes or failures downstream in the system.
Check valves are mandatory for manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and oil and gas industries. Choosing the valve optimized for your system’s fluid type and operating conditions is crucial for reliable backflow prevention and efficient working.
Several variants of pneumatic check valves are classified per design, functioning principle, and installation method. Common types include:
Ball check valves allow forward flow to lift or displace a loose sphere against gravity to a wider chamber. Back pressure makes the ball shift back to the seat tightly, creating a seal. These economical valves handle moderate flow speeds and medium back pressures up to 350 psi well in industrial and commercial uses.
The closure mechanism in swing check valves is a disc hinged inside the valve body. Forward flow makes this disc swing open for passage, while backflow closes it when the disc swings back to its original sealed position. Swing check valves reliably prevent backflow even under high back pressures above 350 psi.
Also called an angle seat piston check; this design uses a free piston to seal off reverse flow. The angled seat helps the piston create a tight seal even against high back pressures – rated beyond 3000psi. Compact stop-check valves are extensively used in hydraulic power units and industrial equipment.
Here, the disc sealing against backflow gets lifted vertically due to incoming forward flow. Spring-loaded types ensure the disc drops instantly to prevent reverse flow reliably. Lift check valves handle high-velocity flow applications, maintaining consistent forward and backflow performance.
Featuring a nozzle and disc held closed by a spring, these are reactive check valves with no moving parts. Forward flow overcomes spring force to pass through the valve while the spring pushes the disc back to the default sealed position. Nozzle check valves reliably prevent surge-induced water hammer effects in pipelines.
Having two swing disks rotating on separate shafts gives this design reduced pressure loss compared to single disk types. These advanced valves allow high forward flow while immediately reacting to stop backflow. Even at peak flow, low pressure loss makes dual plate check valves suitable for significant heating and cooling systems.
Fluid Media Type: Check valves must have compatible materials for chemical resistance against the process fluid flowing through them. Special coatings and alloys suit corrosive media.
Operating Temperature: When buying check valves, the check valve components must withstand temperature extremes across industries, from cryogenics to high steam processes. Special designs and exotic alloys perform under wide temperature spans.
Pressure Ratings: The check valve requires an appropriate forward pressure rating to allow passage without being overpowered. Consider back pressure withstand capability for reliable backflow prevention as per system requirements.
Pipe Diameters: A suitable range of port sizes from leading pneumatic component brands allows for matching various pipe diameters in old and new installations.
Installation Orientation: While check valves work in vertical lines, tilted installations need suitable check valve designs rated to perform reliably in such positions without loss of forward/reverse flow efficiency.
Service Life: Reputed check valve manufacturers use quality internals, ensuring longevity with millions of trouble-free cycles spanning over a decade in critical applications where reliability is paramount.
Global Certifications/Standards: For process industries and exported products, certified design/manufacturing quality per international codes and regional directives assures optimal safety and compliance.
Affordable check valves like tilt disc, ball, swing, and stop types with threaded ports from reputed Indian brands offer reliable backflow prevention for low-pressure applications below 200 psi.
Lifting, nozzle, and inline check valves built using SS and forged brass suit medium pressure steam, water, oil, and moderate chemical processes with 200-600 psi ratings. Most installations across sectors use this mid-range.
Nickel alloy dual plate and nozzle check valves provide exceptional performance handling pressures exceeding 1500 psi and extreme temperatures beyond 700°C across power, refinery, and process plant applications where reliability is paramount.
