Chemical Anchors: The Ultimate Solution for Heavy-Duty Fastening

In construction, strength is determined not only by the quality of the materials used but also by how securely everything is fastened together. Whether you are building a large structure or attaching safety railings, your fixtures must remain affixed. And that’s exactly where chemical anchors enter the scene. Chemical anchors, as compared to regular fasteners, create a bond which is strong, reliable, and long-lasting. At Brick & Bolt we count on forward-thinking anchoring solutions such as these to guarantee that each project stands the test of time and all that comes with it.

What are Chemical Anchors?

Chemical anchors secure threaded rods, bolts, or rebar into pre-drilled holes with a special kind of adhesive. They form a rigid connection by setting around the fastener, whereas mechanical anchors engage by sitting in the hole. Aside from holding everything in position, this step protects against cracking or damage to the surrounding material, especially when dealing with weaker masonry or older concrete. They are a popular choice for operations requiring stability and long-term performance because of their incredible strength and consistent hold.

High-Performance Anchors for Multiple Uses

The main types of chemical anchor are injections or contained in capsules. Among injection chemical anchors, the most widespread and used are the bi-component resins, available in 3 types:

>> Chemical anchors for porous materials and polyester resins, generally applied on damp concrete to avoid the occurrence of alkaline hydrolysis, which could compromise their resistance over time. They are mainly used for: installing frames, thermohydraulic works, light carpentry, and applications on hollow bricks.

>> Chemical anchors made with vinyl ester resins, known for their high mechanical strength and resistance to alkaline hydrolysis, are ideal for high-strength fixings in the building, construction, heavy carpentry, and roadworks sectors.

>> With chemical anchors and epoxy resins, this last category of products has greater resistance than the previous two but requires up to 10 times longer for hardening and fixing. They are used for anchoring reinforcing bars and for fixing deep holes.

Injection chemical anchors are packaged in rigid cartridges that contain base resin and hardener. At the time of installation, resin and hardener are mixed in already fixed proportions.

Chemical anchors in capsules are available on the market in glass or soft material envelopes. The capsule contains resin, a container for the hardener, and any inert fillers.

What are the Applications of Chemical Anchors

Due to their versatility and strength, chemical anchors are used across various industries. Some major applications include:

1. Construction and Civil Engineering

>> Securing columns, beams, and railings.

>> Fixing reinforcement bars in new or retrofitted structures.

2. Industrial Installations

>> Anchoring heavy machinery and structural support.

>> Pipeline and cable tray fastening.

3. Infrastructure Projects

>> Bridges, tunnels, dams, and flyovers.

>> Wind turbines and solar panel foundations.

4. Residential and Commercial Buildings

>> Mounting staircases, balcony railings, and satellite dishes.

>> Reinforcement in renovation or repair works.

5. Marine and Chemical Plants

>> Structures exposed to saline water or corrosive chemicals.

>> Excellent docks, piers, and water treatment facilities.

Understand the Installation Process of Chemical Anchors

A successful installation makes all the difference. Here’s the basic process:

Drill and Clean the Hole:

The correct drill size is needed, typically it is best 1–2 mm larger than the rod or bolt diameter. Cleaned with either a brush, puff of compressed air, or a vacuum cleaner, dust and debris should be removed as they can affect the bonding system due to sealing.

Prepare the Resin Cartridge and Inject the Resin:

For two-part systems, squeeze out a little resin until the color evens out. This ensures proper mixing. To avoid air pockets, fill the hole from the bottom up. Fill around two-thirds to three-quarters of the hole.

Insert the Fastener and Allow for Curing:

Push and twist the rod gently into the resin-filled hole, ensuring it’s fully coated. Allow the resin to cure completely before adding any weight. Curing times vary depending on the resin type and ambient temperature, some cure in minutes; others might need a few hours.

Final Tightening:

Once cured, torque nut or bolt according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure safety and strength.
