Rust is the process of oxidation of metals. Once the process of oxidation on a metal starts rust starts forming. Rust is the result of oxidation of a metal and is hence the by-product of it. Primers were developed in order to prevent the oxidation of metals and to prolong their lives. Berger Red Oxide Primer is one such product. It is an attempt by the company to produce an economical red oxide primer that would prevent the corrosion of ferrous substances. Corrosion is usually dependent on the atmospheric and storage conditions of the metal. Humid conditions and salt in the air both encourage the corrosion of ferrous substances.

Hence to prevent the metal from rust anticorrosive red oxide pigment is mixed with synthetic alkyd resin to form the Berger red oxide primer. This primer is applied once the surface is thoroughly clean and free from any dust or rust particles. The metal is then coated with the primer a few times to ensure an even coat of primer on the surface. This even coat will help prevent corrosion in the future and prolong the life of the metal.
