Bench grinders are the tools which are mostly used in metal fabrication and machine shops. These grinders are composed of a benchtop and a grinder used to drive the abrasive wheels. These grinders are commonly used to hand grind various cutting tools such as chisels and gouges. You can also use these grinders for polishing jobs.

How to use Bench Grinders?

Theses grinders have a wide range of applications. Ranging from removing rust to rounding or polishing of metallic workpiece, bench grinder tool can be very useful. However, it is very important to follow the safety guidelines when you are near a grinder. Some of the guidelines include:

Wheel Guards: These grinders come with wheel guards that ensure that the user is safe. It is advised if wheel guards are not there, the bench grinding machine should not be used at all.

Wheel Speed: Every wheel come with a maximum RPM (rotations per minute), which is printed on its label. The RPM of the grinder should be equal or less than the maximum operating speed of the wheel. Overspeeding can lead to the explosion of the wheel, ending up in an injury, which can be fatal.

Choosing the right workpiece material: The bench grinders use wheels which are a vitreous bond. These wheels are best for their intended task, but they inherently have a risk of cracking. A wheel designed to cut steel is not suitable for grinding softer metals, and vice versa. Hence, it is important to choose the right wheel for every job to avoid injury.

Using the right grinder wheel: The grinders designed to grind the side of a workpiece should not be used to grind periphery or vice versa, as this increases the risk of wheel explosion.

Coolant: Proper coolant should be used while using the bench grinding machine.

Wheel replacement: Sometimes wheels of the grinder need to be replaced. Make sure that the machine is switched off and unplugged. Then the right wheel is installed and tightly gripped to ensure safety.
