Calculators saving our time and efforts since 1962!
Calculators for example abacus were invented a century back even before the written Hindu- Arabic number system. Old mechanical calculators were equal to the size of a typewriter and now taken over by electronic calculators and portable calculators.
Modern calculators have made basic to complex calculations easy. They have not only enhanced the ability to perform basic to complex computations but have also made understanding mathematics easy on a larger scale.
We all are well aware of the functions of a calculator but it’s amazing how many different types and brands are available in the market that can confuse you more than maths!
So here is a little help about our little calculations buddies.
The calculators come with different functions, features, designs, and power sources.
Three categories of calculators according to their power sources are as follows-
- Electric calculators – The old calculators which used to work using electricity.
- Battery calculators – The ones which work on cells or batteries.
- Solar calculators – The solar-powered calculators are powered by solar cells mounted on the device to work.
There are different types of calculators available in the market today. Each performs a different function to help you to complete your work by meeting all the requirements.
Let us have a look at different types of calculators based on their various functions-
1. Abacus
Abacus
Imagine how difficult it would have been to count numbers when the written numbers did not exist. There was a time when the only counting device available was human hands and toes. For counting a larger number or quantities various things were used such as pebbles, shells, twigs, etc.
When the barter system became modernized the merchants started to look for devices to tally the number of goods traded. Abacus was of the many devices which were invented in ancient times and are now used in brain development programs. According to the research abacus, users use both sides of the brain: the right and left hemispheres.
It is has a rectangular wooden frame that holds multiple placed rods on which beads slide up and down. Each arranged rod has a unique place value and each bread represent a number.
2.Basic calculator
Basic Calculator
These are the most commonly used, simple arithmetic calculators used in most offices and houses. They usually come with an LCD of 8 to 12 digits display and some special keys and buttons like “00”, depending on the model. Used for basic mathematical calculations.
There are two types of basic calculators namely:
1. Pocket calculators
2. Desktop calculators
The price range of basic calculators starts from Rs. 60 and can go up to Rs. 2000 depending on the features and brands.
3.Scientific calculators
Scientific Calculator
If you need more advanced calculations then this is the right choice for you. Amongst all the different calculators this calculator allows you to tackle geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and calculus, etc. The high-end scientific calculators offer features like Boolean math, hexadecimal calculations, fractions, and probability calculations, complex numbers, physical constants, unit conversion, calculus, and matrix calculations.
Price ranges from Rs.225 to Rs.6500.
4.Graphing calculator
Graphic Calculator
These calculators come with an advanced level of calculation features like reversible keyboard, pen touch, slide show, matrix and graph show feature, and much more. These calculators can be used for scientific functions with even more advanced features. It calculates along with plotting graphs and has a bigger display than other calculators.
Price ranges from Rs 1700 to Rs 12000.
5.Printing calculators
Printing Calculator
They function as basic arithmetic calculators. These come with the in-build printer and paper roll that gives instant printouts for recorded calculations.
Some of them can print in two colors, black which shows a positive value, and red shows a negative value.
Price range from Rs 1500 to Rs 6000.
Choose the right calculator –
Choosing the right calculator according to your task needs will make your work a lot easier.
On the other hand, wrong calculators will be useless for certain tasks.
To choose the right type of calculator to meet your requirements needs proper knowledge.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind when you are looking for the right calculator-
1. Purpose –
The use of the calculator should be clear to choose the best calculator for your needs.
If you have to do basic calculations then go for the basic calculator, technical or advanced calculations are meant for scientific calculators. Similarly, if you need to have a printout or receipts go for printing calculators.
2.Functions –
Every calculator performs different functions. Look out for the features that can help with your computation. You will not want to waste your time and money on features that you will not use.
3. Display –
Calculators come with different displays.
For –
basic calculators- The screen should be easy and clear to read.
Scientific calculators- The screen shows both results and calculations at the same time.
Printing – the screen shows the calculation and history.
4.Power –
Different calculators have different battery source and life. If you need a basic calculator for general work the power source can be less as they use less power. Wherein, when you have complex computation work you go for scientific or printing calculators which uses more power.
So, look for power as the better the CPU the faster the speed of the calculator.
5.Size-
The calculators differ in the type of functions they perform. When you are using the basic calculator for school and general work, it is pocket size. On the other hand, when choosing a calculator for business or commercial use they are bigger and are used for desk jobs.
6.Durability and reliable
The calculator should be durable and should give you accurate results. While choosing the calculator look out for the reviews and types that are available in the market.
7. Money –
The calculators these days costs from an affordable range to a higher range according to the features and use. Don’t just go for the expensive ones if you do not require complex features.
So, you see our little buddies also require a key check on them while getting the perfect one for your calculation needs.
If you are someone who does not have a lot of calculation work and requires a calculator rarely then a smartphone calculator is enough for you. But if you need to do computation on regular basis then the use of the mobile calculator becomes really confusing and annoying, as it is very monotonous to use. Moreover, there are a lot of chances to make mistakes with large and complex calculations.
Using the calculator with the right specifications and features makes your task a lot easier. Therefore, whether you have general math, engineering exam type of math, or a business to run, or office basics– the right calculator can do the work.

February 11, 2021 at 4:20 pmHi, maybe i’m being a off topic here, but I was browsing your site and it looks exceptional. I’m writing a blog and trying to make it look neat, but everytime I touch it I mess something up. Did you design the blog yourself? Could someone with little experience do it, and add updates without messing it up? Anyways, good information on here, very informative.
